Escape from Alcatraz(1979)

Is it just me or “The Shawshank Redemption(1994)” really possess some striking similarities with this Clint Eastwood starrer?I noted out a lot of similarities like the similar harsh character of the prison warden, inmate keeping a pet, the library job, attack by the prison gay  and even both the film possess the same exact escape plan.In both the films the inmate finds out that the wall concrete is fragile and can be easily chipped out.And the way the prisoner gathers the equipments needed for the break out, it all seems so similar. And i watched the shawshank redemption way before watching this movie, so i always felt a sense of  deja vu while watching this film.

I am a huge fan of Clint Eastwood…But who is not?..He is the manliest man ever. And I love watching his earlier works. That iconic icy stare, strong voice, good looks and a bad attitude..god!!And in this film he gets to be this bad ass prisoner ‘Frank Morris’ who escapes from the alcatraz along with  two other inmates Clarence Anglin and John Anglin.

This film is based on real events that took place in the prison of alcatraz during 1960-62, when Frank Morris and brothers Clarence Anglin and John Anglin escaped from the prison and was never heard from again.

As a work of art  i think The Shawshank Redemption is a better film.It is more poetic or rather say philosophical. And is a feel good movie and emotionally satisfying. But the “escape from alcatraz” is no lesser a movie. It is more racy and exciting and is more realistic. And it has Clint Eastwood. So it cant get any better than that.Watching Clint on screen, gives me chills.I am almost sure that’s the case with everyone. All hail Clint Eastwood.!!

And for those who haven’t watched this film yet, watch it and thank me later.

My Rating: 9

  2. This movie is just epic with the tough Alcatraz Prison as a centerpiece. I’ll watch this movie again for the old school Clint Eastwood feel in a movie.

  29. I have not seen this movie, Alcatraz itself just frightens me. This would have to be something the hubby is interested in watching and me to comfy on the sofa to move. Then I am sure I could get into it.

  31. I think both movies are based on real events. Sadly most prisons must be quite similar and it’s hard to be creative in an enviroment like that.

  32. Funny thing I have actually been to Alcatraz it was a great place to visit with so much history. Now on to the movies I have only seen The Shawshank Redemption but I don’t totally remember all of it because it was so long ago. Most movies however have similar themes as past movies I have noticed.
